CNN AC360 Covers Bronx Health REACH Attorney General Complaint Monday Night 10pm to 12am

Monday night July 20th, on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, Dr. Sanjay Gupta will be airing a segment on racial discrimination that results from separate and unequal care provided by private teaching hospitals in New York City.

The story will focus on a civil rights complaint filed with New York State Office of the Attorney General in June 2008 on behalf of Bronx Health REACH, a coalition of 40 community and faith-based organizations led by the Institute for Family Health. The complaint was filed by New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI) based on the out-patient referral practices of three NYC hospitals - Montefiore, NY Presbyterian, and Mt. Sinai. Dr. Gupta made several visits to New York with his producer and film crews to interview faith leaders, patients, and REACH staff to bring this issue to light.

Please watch and learn more about this so we can work together to end this discriminatory practice. For more information, go to http://neilcalman.blogspot.com .

  • Sign on to the NYC Alliance for Child Nutrition Reauthorization!
  • Tell your legislators to support a Sugar Sweetened Beverage tax! This tax would include not only soda, but all Substantive taxes could change consumption patterns and help to reduce obesity rates, while at the minimum, small taxes could be a way to raise money for public health initiatives. Here's an article about the Sugar Sweetened Beverage tax from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. According to Representative Charlie Rangel (D-NY), past Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, a new excise tax on beverages of 10-cents-per-can could help pay for a new healthcare plan, by raising $112 billion.
  • FoodprintNYC Petition - make NYC food more local and sustainable!

  • Petition to bring back composting to NYC

  • Tell your Representative to support HR 2590, which would extend coverage under Medicare for medical nutrition therapy services to people with pre-diabetes or with risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes. (Right now only care for full-blown diabetes is covered, not prediabetes.) Here are some guidelines for how to contact your Congressmen.
